Unit 20: Single camera production evaluation

Unit 20: Single camera production evaluation

My short film, Released is based on a girl called Sofia who has had financial issues in the past but is now trying to get her life back on track. Sofia meets a stranger in the street (my next character, Derek) who seems to be upset and stressed, her character is a kind compassionate one and therefore, she cannot leave him in the state that he is in, so she invites him to a nearby park to talk.
There is a plot twist in the story when we hear a phone call from a distorted voice to Derek's phone, adding mystery to the film, the voice tells him that he has to do what he is being paid for by tonight.
We also see after the two talk that Derek has a picture of Sofia on his phone, this suggests that he has had an ulterior motive the entire time.
In the end of the film Derek arrives at Sofia's door after stalking her at 4am, they have a brief conversation in which he apologises for having to do this to her before he steps inside the house to kill her with the door closing out behind to add an element of tension and shock amidst the audience. Furthermore, in the final scenes we hear another conversation between the mysterious voice and Derek where he is "Released" from his duty "until next time" as the voice states before hanging up.

This was my first idea for a short film, although I developed the film throughout as I added certain twists and elements to it, for example the mysterious voice recordings were added after filming as I decided to add a more thrilling atmosphere to my film.

I found it was quite difficult to stay on track with the production schedule as I had to make sure that all the actors and locations were readily available at the same time on several occasions. However, I was able to stick to the schedule when editing my film which allowed me to meet the final deadline on time.

Regarding the focus group feedback, I found out that my film would have been better if I had linked the film back more clearly to the title "Released" and if I had done more shot reverse shots to make the conversation flow more naturally as well as close-ups to express my character's emotions to the audience and give them a better understanding of the plot.
To rectify these issues I have redone a voice-over of the man who hired "Derek" at the end of the film, in this version he relates Derek's mission of killing Sofia back to the fact that he had to do this job in order to be truly released from these ongoing missions. Furthermore, I have also shot the conversation scenes in the park again and have been able to make it appear more constant and intriguing to the audience, in addition to close-ups in the final scene when Derek knocks at Sofia's door.

Moreover, I believe that I have succeeded in fulfilling the brief as the film that I have created includes a variety of shots and angles as well as a plot that makes sense and is interesting to the audience. Although, to improve, I could have made the film flow more smoothly to meet the brief more specifically.

When discussing the technical quality my film could be improved in terms of sound quality in the park scenes and the scenes outside Sofia's house as there was traffic and it was fairly windy which affected the audio quality of these scenes. I also had various shots where the rule of thirds was not used properly and therefore the characters heads went out of shot, or they seemed slightly out of place in the frame.

In conclusion, I am quite happy with how my film turned out as I think that the plot of the film was quite unique and had an unexpected ending due to the element of mystery that I added into it. Furthermore, I was particularly happy with the ending scenes where Derek turns up at Sofia’s door and I think the sound and visual quality were quite good. However, I definitely think that the park scene did not have as good sound quality as I had hoped for, in addition to this, I think that by re-recording the final voice note in order to make it clearer that the movie was linked to the title “Released” was very effective as it informs the audience that Derek was hired by this mysterious man as a hit-man to kill Sofia, I have decided to use Roland Barthes enigma code to end my film with questions for the audience to wonder about, for example, Why did somebody want Sofia dead? I believe this was effective as it keeps the air of mystery/curiosity alive in the film, even after its finished.
